Managerial Accounting Specialist - Insurance

Reviews and analyzes internal financial statements; monitors emerging NAIC accounting issues and recommends action to be taken; recommends response to state department of insurance inquiries of financial reports; performs special accounting studies and projects; coordinates and controls Insurance Accounting procedure documentation; coordinates Insurance Accounting training programs.

Position Requirements

Reviews and analyzes internal financial statements of the companies monitors historical results to support analysis. Monitors emerging NAIC accounting issues and proposed changes to accounting practices and regulatory filings, evaluates the financial impact on the companies, and recommends appropriate action and controls implementation to assure compliance. Maintains comprehensive knowledge of NAIC accounting practices and state department of insurance bulletins to ensure compliance with accepted insurance accounting procedures. Coordinates and controls preparation of Insurance Accounting procedure documentation for department functions, provides research assistance and reviews all procedures before final approval. Reviews and researches state department of insurance inquiries of the companies relating to financial reports and recommends appropriate response. Coordinates development of training programs and training material for Insurance Accounting, reviews effectiveness of training and recommends appropriate changes. Performs special accounting studies and projects as assigned. Work paper files prepared by other department members.

Physical Actions

Required job duties are essentially sedentary work consisting of occasional walking, standing and lifting and/or carrying 20 lbs. maximum, seeing, speaking, hearing.

Physical Environment

Required job duties are normally performed in a climate-controlled office environment.

Education Requirements

Four year college degree with a major in Accounting.

Experience Requirements

Five years in Accounting and/or Auditing operations, including experience at the supervisory level.

Special Skills Requirements

- Bank Reconciliations - Ability to perform complex bank reconciliations, assisting operations in the timely clearing reconciling items, preparing CFO summary and external auditor requests related to cash reporting.
- Planning & Forecasting - Supports development of Capital project financial reporting. Works with project managers to review financial results, forecasting, etc. and supports inclusion of capital projects in annual corporate financial plans and subsequent periodic forecasts.
- Fixed asset reporting - Prepares account reconciliations and supports all aspects of fixed asset reporting.
- Tax and regulatory reporting - participates in annual filing season for regulatory and premium tax filings, as well as 1099 filings. Superior written and verbal communication is necessary with state regulatory bodies, external auditors and Internal Revenue Service to resolve outstanding issues related to filings.
- Management communication - Ability to make presentations and provide succint explanations to management upon request.
- Ad hoc - Applies analytic and creative thinking skills to various ad hoc projects.
