Directs commercial risk acceptance, improvement, rejection or modification to support service center goals. Accountable for actual results to service center established goals in the areas of profitable commercial sales growth and market penetration. Takes actions that will promote stability in rating and underwriting programs by evaluating trends in loss frequency and severity. Develops proposals for program or rating changes needed to have a positive impact on the center’s growth and competitive position by monitoring external market conditions.

Position Requirements

Develops and implements strategic initiatives that support growth, profit, retention and service objectives.

Reviews and exercises approval of risks within the Commercial Center’s authority level. Refers risks above authority level along with recommendations for approval, pricing and coverages to be provided.

Directs performance reviews; recommends corrective actions based on results; develops and implements programs to prepare personnel for increasing levels of authority and responsibility by coaching, mentoring.

Monitors the quantity and quality of work performed to ensure processing standards and performance objectives are met.

Provides leadership, direction and management of the risk selection process by conducting philosophy discussions that improve independent thinking and decision making skills.

Coordinates communication with agencies to build and monitor relations; coordinates development of agency-specific plans to increase their underwriting expertise and their commercial production.

Assists the Commercial Financial Analyst in coordinating Agent, Commercial Wholesaler, and Home Office identification of market opportunities and market detractors to increase market share; makes recommendations on pricing levels, product coverage enhancements and development of new products.

Monitors large loss reports, loss trends, and other financial reports that are reflective of performance in relation to goals; develops strategies to correct any deterioration in Combined Ratio figures.

Facilitates discussions with Commercial Property, Liability, Auto, and Worker’s Compensation Claims Operations to gain an understanding of contractual interpretation and how it relates to underwriting practices; solicits information to identify emerging trends.

Oversees the handling of customer and agency complaints to ensure a timely resolution to prevent similar complaints in the future.

Coordinates activities with corporate or coverage counsel when an underwriting subject matter expert is needed to address policies and practices.

Physical Actions

Required job duties include sedentary work as well as some or all of the following physical activities; lifting and/or carrying 40-lbs (suitcases, projectors, handouts, laptop computer, etc.), seeing, speaking, hearing, and occasional operation of a motor vehicle.

Physical Environment

Required job duties are normally performed in a climate controlled office environment, with occasional job duties performed in company car, airplane, hotels and various physical sites dictated by travel that are not always in a climate controlled environment.

Education Requirements

Four-year college degree; and completion of CPCU.

Experience Requirements

Seven years of Commercial Underwriting experience (Preferably with positions of increasing responsibility) including three years in a supervisory role.

Special Skills Requirements

Technical expertise in commercial risk selection and pricing.

Knowledge of management information and business systems (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).

Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated presentation skills.

Analytical thinking skills are necessary to make timely, appropriate decisions and recommendations after reviewing all relevant information. Ability to read and interpret policy contract language.

Working broad-based knowledge of relevant insurance laws and statutes; the contract issue process, computer systems, competitor’s products and marketing practices.
